We are bringing together the UK's strengths in rare disease research to improve diagnosis and treatment through better understanding of the disease.
About Rare Disease Research UK
The Rare Disease Research UK Platform was launched in July 2023 following a £14 million investment from the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). As a UK-wide Platform, we hope to be able to significantly impact the Rare Disease research landscape and improve the lives of those directly or indirectly affected by Rare Diseases.
The Platform is made up of eleven research centres, known as “nodes”, along with a centralised co-ordinating team, known as the “hub”.
The eleven nodes are all based in universities across the UK and each node will be working on a research project that is either focused on one disease area or across multiple rare diseases. Whilst the nodes are based at universities, they are also working with charities, industry and other universities to ensure that they are reaching the right people for the research.
The Rare Disease Research UK Hub is led by Newcastle University in partnership with The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Genetic Alliance UK.
